First things first. I am excited to be alive during the near certain legalization of marijuana. Its something I never thought I would see in my lifetime. Now, that being said; I have a few things I want to get off of my chest in regards to legalization. These are my opinions and I offer no credible studies to add any sort of substance to my arguments.
Number 1: Marijuana is not addictive.
I hear this all of the time from Pot Advocates. It's not habit forming. It's not addictive. Let me be the first to say, bullshit.
I smoked pot every single day from just before graduating high school in 2006 up until about 2008. Don't get me wrong. I fucking loved it. I wasn't fiendish for weed but I did spend what little money I had on it every time I needed a eighth. I didn't pick at my skin, create sores or get dope sick. I would say that it was the same level of addiction as smoking cigarettes. When I didn't have pot to smoke I was an asshole. A fucking bear to be around. But as soon as I lit up that fresh green bud, everything was okay. I would play xbox and eat my weight in potato chips.
Everything that humans find appealing is addictive. Sex, money, exercise, food, and more obviously drugs and alcohol. Anything you enjoy, you can enjoy too much. It's when it starts to interfere with what other people consider a normal life, people start to question your level of involvement in whatever you're enjoying to excess. So bottom line marijuana is addictive, just like sex, just like hotdogs, just like anything you like to do. It depends on your personality. It's completely subjective.
Number 2: let's be honest. All we want to do is get high.
Now I understand that marijuana has its healing properties. Let's not discount that fact. The atmosphere around Marijuana now deserves honesty, and honestly we just want to get high. Let's move away from the conversation about its medical uses, and move in to the real reason Joe America wants it legalized. We just want to smoke a joint without being bothered. Without the insane paranoia of getting caught and getting thrown in jail.
It's worth being honest.
Number 3: Politicians...
If you asked just about any Congressmen fiver years ago about the legalization of marijuana, they would have been preaching about the war on drugs and how it's only helping the American people. Now you can't throw a rock in Congress without hitting a Congressmen that hasn't changed his stance on marijuana. Call it what you want. They have the right to change their views on a subject but... It's rather convenient. This is very likely a different conversation on the level of crookedness we have allowed Congress to achieve in actuality but it deserves mention. It's true that without this shift in ideals in Congress we wouldn't be having this conversation but... Ahh hell, this has another blog entry written all over it.
Until next time...
